Public transport in Kyiv and transport problems from the perspective of the students of NaUKMA
During the 30-31 March 2013 a survey was conducted among 12 students of the Academic writing course at the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”. The purpose of the survey was to discover transport problems of the students.
The survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire given to the students to complete. There were 4 closed questions to answer. The first one asked about the types of transport which students use to get to the university: whether it is metro or metro+land transport or only land transport. The aim of the second question was to discover how often students find themselves in traffic jams on their way to the university:  every morning and every evening, from 3 to 5 times a week or practically never. The third one examined how often they are late for the classes due to public transport: rarely, sometimes or often. And finally the last question asked for the solution to the transport problem from students` point of view: wether the organization of the traffic on the main arteries should be changed or all city transport infrastructure should be reorganized.
As it can be seen from Graph 1, almost a half of respondents usually use both metro and land transport to get to the university. Four respondents out of the rest six students use metro and only two of them use land transport to get to the university. The analysis of responds on the next question indicates that nine out of twelve students practically never suffer from traffic jams on their way, two of them face this problem every day, and only one person meets the challenge from three to five times a week. The answers on the question “how often they are late for classes due to public transport” show that only two out of twelve respondents often feel the influence of traffic jams on their studying process. Three students indicated that sometimes it can be named the reason for their being late. However, most of the respondents (seven of them) believe that public transport cannot interfere with their coming in time. Answering the last question the respondents have taken two different positions. As it can be seen nobody believes that the problem comes from the bad administration. Nine students (which is three-quarter of the respondents) think that the traffic on the main arteries of the city should be reorganized and only three students believe that traffic infrastructure should be improved.
So, the problem of public transport concerns the life of the students, as it not only brings some inconveniences to them but also sometimes it affects their studying.
