“Fahrenheit 451” vs “The book
of Eli”
Recently one local TV channel has shown two films: “Fahrenheit
451” and “The book of Eli”, which are both telling a story about the role of
books in the future. Despite this fact, these two films are different in various
points. Particularly they differ in genre, year of release, role of the books
in the film and the main character.
“Fahrenheit 451” is a pure fantasy about future, where
people watch tv everyday and read comic books instead of traditional books, which
are banned. This movie was released in 1966 and was named “Fahrenheit 451”
because is supposed to be the temperature at which book paper catches a fire.
Books in this film play the central role.
They are strictly prohibited by law and firemen start fires everyday to
destroy each book they find. Moreover books are believed to be evil, stupid and
useless. Main character, Guy Montag (Oskar Werner), is a fireman, who changes
his attitude to the books during the film due to one girl, which he had met
once. He starts saving some books from fire and discovers an unbelievable world
of reading, which made him a criminal and a castaway.
“The book of Eli” is action film about future with shooting
scenes and car chasing. This movie was released in 2010 and was named after main
character, which protected his book throughout the film. In future, which is
depicted in this film, majority of people cannot even read. But those who can
appreciate books more than life. One of such people is the main character, Eli
(Denzel Washington), who protects Holy Bible from evil person, who wants to
conquer the world with the help of this book.
Eli has maintained this book save until his last breath and gave it away
to humanity.
So both these films tell the story about the role of books
in the future and differ in genre, year of release, role of the books in the
film and the main character. Due to this both films are worth watching as they
offer completely different approaches to the books in future. Both films have
unique plot and artistic value. Watching these films is highly recommended.
