One of the bases
of structuralism is the distinction between language and speech. Unlike language,
which is some abstract substance,
speech is actual material that is
used in everyday communication. Language has social character, it is single for everybody; however, speech is
absolutely individual, every speaker
creates his own. While language is passive
ready-made product, speech is active
process. Though language and speech are indissolubly connected, they have significant
differences.
